SUMMARY:The Margot Livesey in Person - Odyssey Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Due to the weather on February 13\,  we rescheduled the event. Join us now on Tuesday\, February 27 at 7 PM as Margot Livesey presents her new novel\, The Road from Belhaven.  \nWe are hosting an event with Margot Livesey\, a Scottish-American author\, where she will present her new novel set in Belhaven\, Scotland. We thought that this free event might be of interest to you and the communities you work with. It will be held on Tuesday\, February 27th at 7 p.m. at our store\, Odyssey Bookshop\, in South Hadley\, Massachusetts. \nTuesday\, February 27th at 7 p.m.\nDoors open at 6:30 p.m. \n \nJoin us on Tuesday\, February 27th at 7 p.m. as Margot Livesey presents her new novel\, The Road from Belhaven. \nFrom the New York Times best-selling author of The Flight of Gemma Hardy\, a novel about a young woman whose gift of second sight complicates her coming of age in late-nineteenth-century Scotland. \nGrowing up in the care of her grandparents on Belhaven Farm\, Lizzie Craig discovers a small child that she can see into the future. But her gift is selective – she doesn’t\, for instance\, see that she has an older sister who will come to join the family. As her “pictures” foretell various incidents and accidents\, she begins to realize a painful truth: she may glimpse the future\, but she can seldom change it.

SUMMARY:Robert Burns Night Dinner and Concert in Jericho\, Vermont
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Vermont Institute of Celtic Arts and Catamount Pipe Band \nThere’s no time like the present to raise a glass to the legacy of Robert Burns. Step through time and celebrate the life and work of Scotland’s revered\, national poet\, Robbie Burns. The Burns night tradition started soon after the poet’s death in 1796\, when several of his friends gathered to celebrate Burns’ life and work. The tradition has continued around the world for over 200 years. Join Catamount Pipe Band and the Vermont Institute of Celtic Arts as we celebrate the works and life of Scotland’s National Poet. \nThis evening will be filled with good food\, music\, and stories to celebrate the works of Robbie Burns. Before dinner\, the host recites The Selkirk Grace – the prayer of thanks written by Burns. Next\, the haggis is piped in. This rotund wee bag of sheep’s innards was so revered during Burns time that it is introduced with a reciting of one of Burns’ most famous poems\, “Address to a Haggis”. The evening ends with the singing of Auld Lang Syne\, and all guests are invited to sing along. So sit back and enjoy the evening as Ian Gauthier\, MC\, singer\, and story-teller leads us through the celebration. There will be copious amounts of music performed by the Catamount Pipe Band\, Green Mountain Celts\, and a growing list of other musicians and dancers. \nTickets: (Pre Registration required for the Dinner. ). Setting for the dinner is limited to 50\, so buy now to reserve yourself a spot.\nCombo Ticket – Dinner and Concert $30\nConcert $12 Adults\, Children under 12 free \nDate – Saturday\, January 27th\nSnow Date – Saturday\, February 10th \n6:00pm – Traditional Haggis Dinner\n7:30pm – Concert \nLocation – Good Shepherd Lutheran Church 273 VT Route 15 Jericho\, VT \nMake Checks Payable to Catamount Pipe Band\nMail checks to Iain MacHarg 1611 VT Route 232\, Marshfield\, VT 05658 \n

SUMMARY:Screening of new documentary\, Voices Over the Water
DESCRIPTION:“Who’s choosing you?”\nPride in our ethnic roots is widespread in America. We all want to belong and being part of more than one culture is commonplace. Voices Over the Water is a story about tragedy and opportunity\, about loss and survival\, irony and consequence. As Americans\, we espouse the ideals of individualism and freedom. Among those seeking this “paradise on earth\,” were people from the Highlands of Scotland. They spoke a different language\, wore strange clothing. and faced a hard choice: abandon those things that make them distinctive\, or risk isolation and failure.\nToday when Scottish roots and culture are celebrated\, a modern identity is front and center — a colorful\, romantic image that may have roots in something far more sinister. Voices Over the Water searches for what lies behind these celebrations and pageantry\, uncovering tragedies\, often unspoken and perhaps misunderstood. What can we learn about our identity as Americans by looking back into this rich history? Who can claim this history as their own? And who’s choosing you?\nJoin us at the Rhode Island International Film Festival for a screening of the documentary at the Showcase Cinema\, 10 Providence Place\, Providence RI\, on Sunday August 13th at 4pm.

SUMMARY:TRACING YOUR SCOTTISH ROOTS - An Online Genealogy Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Join NHSCOT and presenter Ronald W. Collins this Thursday\, February 23 for “Tracing Your Scottish Roots\,” an online genealogy seminar. \nEveryone starting to dive into Scottish genealogy needs a place to start. It is not always obvious. Some begin with a known Scottish ancestor and try to find where they came from in Scotland\, who were their parents\, etc. Others only know their American ancestors originated in Scotland\, but they don’t know where and when. \nThis seminar walks participants through the process of North American genealogical research and Scotland genealogical research. The seminar is an interactive slide show. A PowerPoint presentation on how to do genealogical research will be given but participants are encouraged to ask questions and interact with the presenter during the presentation. The presentation will take about 45 minutes and questions and answers will take approximately another 45 minutes. \nThe presenter\, Ronald W. Collins\, has written over thirteen history and genealogy books. He is the author of the widely acclaimed The Genealogy of the Clan MacLean\, now in its third edition. He is a member of the New England Historic Genealogical Society\, the Scottish Genealogical Society and the Mull Museum. Ron is the Senior Genealogical Curator for ScotsNewEngland (www.ScotsNewEngland.org). He is the Consulting Archivist for Sir Lachlan MacLean\, 28th Chief of Clan MacLean at Duart Castle\, Isle of Mull\, Scotland. He is also the Genealogist for the Clan Maclean International Gathering 2023 on the Isle of Mull. \nThe Zoom presentation is $25 and is being offered by NHSCOT. Register Today!\nEvent sign ups will be cut off the day of each event at noon so that we can send out the Zoom invite link. \nAdditional Genealogy Seminar Dates: March 30\, April 27\, and May 25 at 7 pm. \nCourtesy: https://nhscot.org/events/tracing-your-scottish-roots-february/

SUMMARY:Burns Night Celebration in Jericho\, Vermont
DESCRIPTION:Ian Gauthier – Master of Ceremonies\nThere’s no time like the present to raise a glass to the legacy of Robert Burns. Join Catamount Pipe Band of Vermont and the Vermont Institute of Celtic Arts as we celebrate the works and life of Scotland’s National Poet. \nThis evening will be filled with good food\, music\, and stories to celebrate the works of Robbie Burns. Before dinner\, the host recites The Selkirk Grace – the prayer of thanks written by Burns. Next\, the haggis (including a vegetarian version) is piped in. This rotund wee bag of sheep’s innards was so revered during Burns time that it is introduced with a reciting of one of Burns’ most famous poems\, “Address to a Haggis”. The evening ends with the singing of Auld Lang Syne\, attributed to Burns\, and all guests are invited to sing along. So sit back and enjoy the evening as Ian Gauthier\, MC\, singer\, and story-teller leads us through the celebration. There will be copious amounts of music performed by the Catamount Pipe Band\, special guest singer – Rev. Arnold Thomas\, Green Mountain Celts\, and a growing list of other musicians. \nTickets: (Pre Registration required for the Dinner. )\nHaggis Dinner $25\nConcert $12 Adults\, Children under 12 free\nCombo Ticket – Dinner and Concert $30\nBurn’s Night celebration\nDate – Saturday\, January 28th\nSnow Date – Saturday\, February 4th \nTime\n6:00pm – Traditional Haggis Dinner (vegetarian option offered as well)\n7:30pm – Concert\nLocation – Good Shepherd Lutheran Church\n273 VT Route 15 Jericho\, VT\nReservation Deadline for dinner: Thursday\, January 19\, 2022\nMake Checks Payable to Catamount Pipe Band \nMail given Form below to Nicole MacHarg\, 1611 VT Route 232\, Marshfield\, VT Email:\nredhed27@gmail.com.
