The Scots in New England first annual awards event was held on St. Andrew’s Day, November 30^th, 2023, at the British Consul General’s residence in Boston. We are grateful to Dr. Peter Abbott and his team for hosting us and to all our sponsors and supporters for making this initiative possible.

The awards were created to recognize individuals who have provided outstanding leadership and made a real difference in their Scottish communities throughout New England.

We recognized three categories:

The Emerging New England Scot of the Year is awarded to a person under 35 years old who has started to make an impact on their Scottish community.

Originally from Aberdeen, Iona has spent the past three years collaborating with esteemed organizations like the Boston Celtic Music Festival, National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA, and NHSCOT. Her focus on social media, paired with exceptional hosting and marketing skills, has successfully drawn in a new and diverse audience of Scots in America. Iona has transformed heritage into a compelling and relevant topic, inspiring exploration and support.

The New England Scot of the Year is awarded to a person over 35 years old who has made an outstanding contribution to their Scottish community in the past year.

As NHSCOT Clan Committee Chair since 2014, Robin’s leadership shines in collaborating with Clans, making fair decisions, and inspiring the next generation to carry the torch of Scottish heritage. Her dedication extends to the Scottish canine world, advocating for the preservation of breeds with almost 30 years of raising and showing Skye Terriers.  Now transitioning to Border Terriers, Robin’s volunteer work is a testament to her commitment to education, sustainability, and advocacy.

The New England Scot Lifetime Achievement is awarded to an individual who has made a significant contribution to the New England Scottish community over their entire career.

Born and educated in Scotland, Helen’s dedication to the Scottish community spans her entire career. Retiring as Senior Vice President from Liberty Mutual in 2012, she passionately supports Scottish organizations in the USA. Currently Chair of the Board for National Trust for Scotland Foundation USA, Helen led the Foundation in granting $11 million to Scotland’s largest conservation charity since 2000. As Past President and key supporter of Entrepreneurial Scotland Foundation USA for 12.5 years, Helen fostered opportunities for scholars and entrepreneurs. Her impact also includes being a supporting Founder of the Saltire Foundation, hosting Scottish university undergraduates during her 36-year career, creating transformative experiences.

From championing scholars to rallying American support for Scottish wildlife, Helen’s achievements are diverse. Her strong Scottish network, coupled with her generosity, ensure she continues to be a pillar of the Scottish community in New England.

Our request for each award recipient is that they become an Ambassador for Scots in New England over the next 12 months and encourage others to embrace participating in their Scottish communities.
