The Tartan Army Has Landed, and Boston Loves It

If you have been anywhere near Boston or Providence over the past week or on social media, you will already know. The kilts. The bagpipes. The singing that carries on long after the final whistle. Scotland’s legendary traveling supporters, the Tartan Army, have arrived in New England for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and they have stolen the show.

Thousands of Scottish supporters marched through the streets of Boston after Scotland’s opening match, flooding Lansdowne Street and taking the celebrations all the way to Fenway Park. The Red Sox were playing, but on that night it felt like the Scots were the main event. Long after the baseball game ended, fans were still singing their hearts out inside Fenway, and a city that thought it had seen everything was left grinning from ear to ear.

Their presence has become such a fixture around Boston that one local summed it up perfectly in a Reddit post:

“I for one welcome our new kilted overlords.”

And who could argue? Scottish visitors said Boston’s hospitality made the city feel like a home away from home, with locals stopping them in the street just to chat.

But this is the thing about the Tartan Army that sets them apart. It was never just about the football. Scotland’s fans donated nearly $30,000 to organizations in Providence, including a $10,000 gift to the Hasbro Children’s Hospital cancer unit and funding for a new bagpipe education program for children through the Rhode Island Highlanders Pipe Band. That is the Tartan Army in a nutshell: here for a party but always ready to leave a place better than they found it.

They chartered buses, packed out bars near Faneuil Hall, and brought a level of color and noise that New England has rarely seen. And through it all, they have been warm, funny, generous and genuinely delightful to be around.

For those of us in the Scottish community here in New England, this has been something special to witness. Scotland is back on the world stage after a 28-year absence, and the Tartan Army has reminded everyone exactly what makes Scottish supporters so beloved wherever they go. We could not be more proud!

Come back any time, folks. You are always welcome here.
